Beef tomato Tafury can boost the entire segment
“Tafury RZ enables us to offer our customers a tasty and visually appealing beef tomato as a way of stimulating the market for medium-sized and large tomatoes,” says Christopher Juranek from REWE Germany. The food retail chain has been carrying this Rijk Zwaan tomato under its REWE Bio label since winter 2021/2022. Food waste reduction
Food should be eaten, not thrown away. It sounds simple, yet one third of all food globally is wasted – either during cultivation or the production process, in the supermarket or by consumers. That's why we're looking for plant traits that extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. More retail news
Growth in organic fruit and vegetables: opportunities for retailers
Organic fruits and vegetables are rapidly gaining ground in Dutch supermarkets. But how can that growth be accelerated? The answer lies in knowledge, inspiration and a carefully considered approach to shelf space, according to BioAcademy and Rijk Zwaan. They have taken the initiative to co-develop the very first e-learning programme for fresh produce category managers and employees. Dutch retailers got a sneak preview during the Bio AGF Kennisdag event held at Green Specialties on 11 December 2025.
Dutch supermarkets increasingly switch to organic-only options
Consumption of organic produce in the Netherlands has risen 42% in the past two years, and the amount of production area devoted to organic crops increased by 9% in 2023 alone. A growing number of vegetables on supermarket shelves are only available as an organic option. Dutch beetroot is a prime example of this development. “This has been achieved through close collaboration in the value chain,” says organic arable and outdoor vegetable grower Piet van Andel.
"Thanks to these varieties, we can increase the quality and volumes of our productions."
After introducing the first tomato varieties with high resistance to ToBRFV from the new Rugose Defense line, Rijk Zwaan strengthens its partnership with Fri-El Green House, an alliance that has been established for several years. At the end of 2022, the seed company launched the Rugose Defense line, tomato varieties with high resistance (HR) to ToBRFV. Identifying a genetic source resistant to the virus was a priority in the varietal development programs, leading to the creation of the new HR ToBRFV portfolio, well-stocked with all the main tomato types: clusters, cherry tomatoes, plum tomatoes, and cocktail tomatoes.
