“Rugose Defense improves the reliability of our turnover”

It was the solution that tomato growers all over the world had been hoping for: the introduction of tomato varieties with high resistance (HR) against the Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV). This is one way in which Rijk Zwaan is contributing to the ‘fresh foundation’ for companies such as Noordhuys Tomatoes in the Netherlands.

Snack pepper Tatayoyo nominated for the FLIA 2023

Rijk Zwaan is very honoured to announce that pepper product brand Tatayoyo has been nominated for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award 2023. Heleen van Rijn-Wassenaar, Specialist Marketing Pepper of the vegetable breeding company, comments: “For us, this nomination crowns ten years of research and breeding work. With its unique taste, this ready-to-eat snack pepper is one way in which we hope to help our chain partners to move ‘freshly forward’, in line with our theme for Fruit Logistica this year.

"The Alzamora pepper is a perfect fit with our market."

Less heating, more screening – that’s how pepper growers are responding to the high energy prices. Even in a less active greenhouse climate, the new red blocky pepper Alzamora RZ achieves excellent production levels of outstanding fruits.

‘Tatayoyo delivers an evolution to the pepper category’

A tropical adventure bursting with flavour – that’s what the pepper brand Tatayoyo is all about. Rijk Zwaan is very proud that this unique snack pepper has been nominated for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award 2023. We asked our retail partner and colleagues: What makes Tatayoyo so unique? And how is this snack pepper moving businesses ‘freshly forward’?

‘Beef tomato Tafury can boost the entire segment’

“Tafury RZ enables us to offer our customers a tasty and visually appealing beef tomato as a way of stimulating the market for medium-sized and large tomatoes,” says Christopher Juranek from REWE Germany.

‘Thanks to the new resistant melon varieties, clients can count on quality fruits’

Resistances to diseases such as leaf minor and brown spots help melon growers move forward. “Thanks to Rijk Zwaan’s new resistant varieties, we can guarantee clients cleaner fruits, using less chemicals. Our European chain partners can also count on quality fruits with a long shelf life,” says Richard August Muller of the Brazilian company Agrícola Famosa.

Spanish alternative for tasty mini tomato on the vine in wintertime

The production of greenhouse vegetables in Northern Europe drops sharply in the winter, especially in view of today’s high energy prices. Rijk Zwaan actively helps chain partners to think about alternatives. “Together, we are working to find new solutions for supply problems in the marketplace,” says Juan José López, Managing Director of the Spanish producer Cualin Quality.

Whitepaper provides insight into changes in vegetable buying behaviour

Due to the high inflation, some consumers are buying different types of vegetables. “In order to save money, those customers strongly buy discount products and fewer premium goods,” states Jan Willutzki from EDEKA Group, Germany’s largest supermarket corporation. To gain a better understanding of the changes in vegetable buying behaviour, Rijk Zwaan conducted research among consumers in Germany, the UK and Spain. The findings are analysed in a whitepaper which the vegetable breeding company will be sharing with value chain partners at its Retail Center in Berlin during Fruit Logistica.
