It has completely adapted itself to lettuce, hides deep inside the head and multiplies rapidly. We’re talking about Nasonovia ribisnigri, the currant-lettuce aphid feared by all lettuce growers. However, it ignores Rijk Zwaan’s new lettuce varieties with Nr:0,1 resistance. Anneke Kroes, a phytopathologist at Rijk Zwaan, explains how her research contributed to achieving this all-important breakthrough for growers.

Happinas RZ and Friendlinas RZ, the two new iceberg lettuce varieties with high resistance against Nasonovia ribisnigri (Nr:0,1), are a major advancement for lettuce growers worldwide. The varieties not only offer a solution to the troublesome currant-lettuce aphid, but also meet all other quality requirements. “Growers can see the iceberg lettuces for themselves during our Demo Days in September,” says Peter Sonneveld, Crop Coordinator Lettuce at Rijk Zwaan.

Resistant iceberg lettuce varieties: “Difference between yield and no yield”

For iceberg lettuce growers, Nasonovia ribisnigri is a real headache, according to Martin Schrörs, Crop Specialist at Rijk Zwaan in Germany. “Last June, the aphid pressure became so intense that some growers had to destroy their lettuces. They have doubts about continuing with this crop next year due to the high risks and costs involved,” says Martin. “The two new Nr:0,1-resistant iceberg lettuce varieties are therefore a game-changer.”

How a promise and an unattractive wild lettuce led to Nr:0,1-resistant lettuce varieties
Johan Schut

When a new variant of the black currant-lettuce aphid Nasonovia ribisnigri emerged in 2007, Johan Schut saw with his own eyes how much damage it caused to lettuce crops. The breeding manager lettuce made a promise to lettuce growers on behalf of Rijk Zwaan: “We will find a solution for this”. Now, 18 years later, the company has finally fulfilled that promise by launching two new Nr:0,1-resistant iceberg lettuce varieties.

“We have to protect the new lettuce aphid resistance together”

The recent introduction by Rijk Zwaan of lettuce varieties with Nr:0,1 resistance are a major step towards futureproof lettuce cultivation. However, we should not become complacent, according to Rijk Zwaan’s Marco van der Lans: “We need to use all the available tools to protect the resistance.”
