The right resistances add value for organic melon growers

In Europe, organic melons and watermelons are a niche market with plenty of potential. Rijk Zwaan offers organic growers robust, disease-resistant varieties across all segments. A new leaflet provides a complete overview of the company’s high-quality organic and non-chemically treated seeds. Crop Co-ordinator Bernardo Cuenca Bono highlights some of his favourites.

Broad package of resistances

Before explaining what he likes most about his favourite melon and watermelon varieties, Bernardo sums up which traits organic growers are generally looking for: “A broad package of resistances is essential, because growers may not apply chemical crop protection agents. Additionally, our use of a rootstock provides protection against soilborne diseases. And of course, good yields, excellent flavour, a long shelf life and a smaller size are important for this market.”

Galia melons with Px Defense

The GalunaTM line perfectly meets those needs. These high-quality Galia melons not only offer a stable shelf life, but also have an exceptional flavour. “Moreover, we have made significant progress in the development of new varieties within this line carrying the Px Defense label,” explains Bernardo. “These varieties have extended resistance against powdery mildew, including races 6 and 7. We expect to be able to introduce them in the near future.”

Paloverde RZ with CYSDV resistance

For the Harper melon type, Bernardo recommends the Paloverde variety to organic growers. “Paloverde is a unique melon variety distinguished by its resistance against the Cucurbit Yellow Stunting Disorder Virus (CYSDV). The resistance keeps plants stronger, greener and more resilient throughout the cycle. This supports healthy growth and helps achieve excellent sugar levels, ensuring consistent fruit quality and taste. And at 1.6 to 2 kg, the average fruit weight is in line with market needs.”

Zinasol RZ with Ag Defense

When it comes to Cantaloupe types, Bernardo highlights Zinasol as a good choice for organic cultivation. As an Ag Defense variety, it provides protection against the cotton aphid as well as viruses that spread it. “This melon variety is ideal for the early cycle. The fruits have a good size, from 0.9 to 1.3 kg, and an early high sugar content.”

Gatinho RZ watermelons

For watermelons, Rijk Zwaan’s Sandissima concept is perfectly aligned with the organic market, explains Bernardo. “Sandissima includes a range of watermelon varieties with great flavour and small micro-seeds. Gatinho is our most important variety. It germinates well, even in cold conditions. It has a high sugar content as well as excellent fruit setting and productivity. With an average weight of 2.5 kg, the uniform, small-sized fruits are ideal for organic export markets,” he states.

Sandissima with Px Defense

Within the Sandissima concept, Rijk Zwaan will soon be introducing a number of new varieties with Px Defense. Bernardo: “These watermelons have healthier plants, more yield and healthier fruits. An extra level of protection is very relevant for organic growers.”

Morgan RZ with Fusarium resistance

Bernardo’s final tip is the watermelon variety Morgan, because of its intermediate resistance against Fusarium (Fus:1). “Although the average fruit weight of 10 to 14 kg is a little on the high side for the organic market, it’s a vigorous early variety that produces high yields,” he comments.

Good relationships with chain partners

The robust varieties are not the only reason why organic growers choose Rijk Zwaan, according to Bernado: “They also highly value the quality and dependability of our seeds, as well as our service and relationships with value chain partners. As a result, we are able to help growers further develop the organic market. We are always open to discussing opportunities.”
