From seeds to smiles: a successful greenhouse project in Slovenia

The start of lettuce production in a new high-tech greenhouse marked a major milestone for Panvita, one of Slovenia’s leading sustainable food producers. “We are very satisfied with Rijk Zwaan’s support, both during the construction phase and later during production,” say David Medvar and Simona Petek Čerpnjak from Panvita.

High-quality seeds and continuous support

The collaboration between Panvita and Rijk Zwaan illustrates the power of care in growing strong connections. “When we decided to build the greenhouse, we were looking for a partner who could help us select the right technology to meet our needs,” states project manager David. “We chose Rijk Zwaan because of the high-quality seeds and the continuous support they offer across all areas where we require additional assistance.”

Locally grown fresh food

With over 700 employees and 3,500 hectares of production area, Panvita sees this greenhouse project as an investment in the future of food. “We aim not only to ensure year-round access to fresh, safe, locally grown food, but also to reduce our country’s reliance on imports, enhance food security, and strengthen its self-sufficiency,” emphasises marketing manager Simona.

Exceptional knowledge

David appreciates the seed-breeding company’s continuous support for Panvita, both during the greenhouse construction project in Nemščak, Prekmurje, and in the production phase: “Rijk Zwaan assists us not only with seeds, but also across many other areas. Their consultants’ knowledge is exceptional. They are able to explain complex growing processes in a clear and simple way, making our collaboration both effective and enjoyable.”

Respect for nature

Thanks to the close collaboration between Panvita and Rijk Zwaan production got underway on 22 April: Earth Day. “This reflects our respect for nature – both symbolically and in practice,” Simona explains. The first lettuces are expected to be harvested in June. “Watching the healthy lettuces growing truly puts a smile on my face,” David comments.

Year-round high-quality lettuce

Simona is aware that new challenges are likely to arise after the first harvest. “Our ongoing mission is to deliver high-quality, Slovenian-grown lettuce all year round. To make this happen, we’ll continue to work closely and effectively with our own team as well as specialists and trusted advisors like Rijk Zwaan.”

Care grows stronger connections

At Rijk Zwaan, we believe that true growth starts with care and collaboration. During High Tech Weeks in the Netherlands we connect ideas, people and opportunities for the future of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). Meet us at the GreenTech (10 - 12 June, RAI Amsterdam), the Trial Centre Hydroponics leafy greens (10 - 20 June, Dinteloord) and the Trial Centre High Tech fruit crops (10 - 27 June, De Lier).
