Innovation at the Winter Open Field Days 2019
From 11-15 February, Rijk Zwaan opened its 9th Winter Open Field Days in Spain to show the latest innovations and varieties in lettuce and open field crops. Interested parties from the international agri food industry came to the Trial Demo Center in Cartagena to discuss the novelties.
The fields looked fabulous and visitors were inspired by all the innovations in varieties that bring improvements in terms of colour, flavor, texture, resistances and field performance.
Lettuce for every need
As global market leader in lettuce, Rijk Zwaan strives to continuously surprise the industry by developing attractive and resilient new varieties that anticipate consumer and market needs. One of the lettuce types that stood out was Crystal lettuce. This lettuce, ideal for use in burgers and sandwiches, as well as in traditional Asian ‘hot pot’ dishes, has excellent shelf life and is mainly grown in hydroponics.
The spotlight was also on Snack lettuce, winner of the innovation prize at Fruit Attraction 2018. This lettuce is especially suitable for using its leaves as an edible cup for both cold and hot different fillings and adds a new dimension to the consumption of lettuce.
New to Rijk Zwaan’s assortment was FunTastyCos. This novelty has a sweet taste as well as a freshness and crunchy texture to distinguish itself from traditional cos and iceberg lettuces. As addition to the Open Heart Cos, FunTastyCos is interesting for both processing and on industry level.
Rijk Zwaan also demonstrated the new varieties of mini cos. These green and red are a real eyecatcher in duo-pack. Growers can now benefit from their improved resistances and better adaptation to the different production cycles.
Of course, the demo wouldn’t be complete without the innovative and successful Salanova. Salanova is specially designed for convenience and efficiency with its ready-to-eat babysized leaves and one cut ready way of preparation.
Small variety, big impression
Last but not least, the mini pointed cabbage was introduced as a new ingredient for salads. Under the name of Cabbisi™, Rijk Zwaan taps into the food trend of freshness and convenience by offering consumers maximum health benefits with minimum effort. Cabbisi™ combines easy preparation and surprising versatility. Even though small, Cabbisi™ makes a big impression.
Innovations in brassica
Visitors were also informed about novelties within brassica. The new concept Violet & Luca, with purple and white kohlrabi’s, aims to boost the market with its packaging concept. Also in other types of brassica’s, like cabbages, cauliflower and broccoli, the great variety in size, appearance and even colours stood out on the field.
