Radish

Radish is usually offered as a bunched product and sometimes as bagged loose radishes as well. The product is often eaten raw and used in salads or as a garnish. Rijk Zwaan has an ever-increasing range and wants to distinguish itself in radish with excellent quality.

Radish Round Red

Excellent quality
Rijk Zwaan develops varieties for not only the red, round type but also for the ‘French Breakfast’ type. To this end we focus on the various growing methods found around the world. Radish is grown in glasshouses and tunnels, and outdoors. Different markets require widely varying packaging formats and sometimes specific product traits.

Not pithy
When breeding new varieties we focus on growers as well as on consumers. One of the challenges is preventing pithiness. Radish can easily become spongy as a result of the transpiring leaves drawing water from the round roots. That is why we select varieties that are less susceptible to this. We also select on a good colour of the roots and nice and healthy tops.

Harvesting machines
As en emerging player in radish, we are striving for a full and complete range, which allows a beautiful and tasty product to be grown year-round. In order to do this we take a close look at market developments. Harvesting machines, for instance, are being used more and more, which makes uniformity increasingly important. By means of the highest level of research we are also developing disease-resistant varieties.
