Belief in differentiation
There is an enormous diversity in cucumbers. For instance, we develop cucumbers of varying lengths, colours and skins. From mini to long and from smooth to prickly. Rijk Zwaan believes in further differentiation and continues to look for new opportunities. One very good example of this are snack cucumbers, which are just the right size to eat in one bite. This type is also ideal as a snack between meals for especially children.
High production
Rijk Zwaan varieties are characterised by a high production and a good shelf life. Other breeding traits depend very much on the user objectives and the growing area. For unheated polyhouses we look for harvest reliability by means of stable varieties with a high disease-resistance level. For other areas we select varieties that need as little energy as possible.
Modern growing technique
New growing techniques demand new variety traits. Rijk Zwaan keeps a keen eye on, for instance, the emergence of high-wire cropping and supplementary lighting on modern glasshouse nurseries. Varieties with specific suitability can contribute to a qualitatively sublime product. Alongside this, Rijk Zwaan keeps looking for new market opportunities with always an ear cocked for signals from the marketplace.
