Melon

Melons are originally a real summer product but in recent years they have experienced a small revolution. Through intensive breeding efforts, melons have a longer shelf life nowadays, with the same good taste. Rijk Zwaan is active in an increasing number of segments.

Market leader
At the moment, Rijk Zwaan is an important player in melons of the Cantaloupe type, an orange-fleshed melon, and yellow melons. The range of other types, such as galia and piel-de-sapo, is also expanding and in watermelons and rootstocks we have been active for many years as well. Rijk Zwaan recently launched its Caribbean concept, a distinguishing marketing concept with unique characteristics and several varieties.

Flavour and shelf life
Because melons are transported over vast distances, shelf life is becoming an ever more important criterion. The Rijk Zwaan varieties combine this with a good flavour and excellent presentation and fruit quality. For the total taste experience, especially the Brix value is closely watched, as it represents the sugar content in a melon. Our selection work for growers concentrates on a good yield and disease resistance.

More and more types
In recent years Rijk Zwaan has started up several new breeding programmes for different types in different markets. Our selection work increasingly also focuses on important traits for the convenience market. They include, for instance, larger fruit, a thin skin and a small seed cavity. But structure, firmness and shelf life after processing also play an important part in this leading position.
