Reliable parsley
Parsley is grown for its aromatic leaves and fresh flavour. The herb is often offered bunched but sometimes also as young plants in a pot, dried or frozen, Rijk Zwaan focuses on certain varieties with a consistent quality, for consumers and growers. In addition we work on specific varieties for different growing areas. A distinction is made between a smooth type with a refined flavour and a curly type, which is generally used as a garnish.

Fast-growing chives
Chives can be grown in various ways. Especially so-called forcing of chives is done under cover, for delivery in pots to the consumer. It is grown outdoors mainly for industrial applications, for instance as an ingredient in soups. Our breeders look for nicely erect chives, to make the product easy to grow, and resistance to diseases. What we also look for are fast-growing varieties with a high production for growers and a nice, dark colour for consumers.

Cultivation at a higher level
Rijk Zwaan also wants to stand out in the herbal range. We are, for instance, the only company with hybrid varieties in chives that offer growers more vigour, and we are successful with intermediate resistance against rust. In parsley we keep working on a wide range of reliable varieties. For parsley as well as for chives we strive to take their cultivation to a higher level and so get top-quality herbs on the shelves.
